H.M. Queen Máxima Officially Launches Oncode Institute in Holland

Virtual institute of 560 academic researchers that are working to crack the code to cancer and make a difference for patients

H.M. Queen Máxima Officially Launches Oncode Institute in Holland

On 5 February, H.M. Queen Maxima launched Oncode Institute at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam together with patients, researchers and partners. The launch of Oncode Institute unites top Dutch cancer researchers in their efforts to make a positive difference for patients. This independent institute focuses on three pillars: excellent research, intensive collaboration and reducing the time it takes to get treatment methods into clinics. The goal is to translate fundamental cancer insights into better and more affordable care as efficiently as possible.

Oncode Institute is working in cooperation with the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF), along with the ministries of Economic Affairs and Climate PolicyEducation, Culture and Science; Health, Welfare and Sport, as well as Health~Holland, the Netherlands Federation of University Medical Centres, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, and the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development. These parties will collectively invest a total of €120 million in Oncode Institute over the next five years. “Oncode Institue is a powerful force in getting fundamental insights about the biology of cancer to clinics more quickly,” says Ton Rijnders, General Director Oncode Institute.

Outsmarting Cancer Together

Five prominent Dutch cancer researchers have united forces to make Oncode Institute a reality. With collaboration as a primary focus, they are combining the strengths of 43 excellent cancer research leaders from nine partner-institutes. These leaders are each bringing their own research teams, meaning that a total of 560 academic researchers will be working together under one collective strategy to crack the code of cancer.

About Oncode Institute

Oncode is an independent institute dedicated to understanding cancer and translating research into practice. The best fundamental cancer researchers in the Netherlands come together in Oncode to bring their research discoveries into clinics faster. Along with performing vital research, Oncode will specialize in cooperating with third parties to guide its scientists’ discoveries towards translational and clinical research and novel diagnostics, drugs and treatments. Its aims are to help more patients survive, to improve quality of life for those afflicted, and ultimately to cure cancer.
